Background
  • Chinese Conservative Baptist Church (CCBC) has been an established body of believers in Chinatown for 52 years.  In July 2009, we celebrated our church’s 50th Anniversary.
  • We are comprised of a Chinese Congregation and an English Congregation.  Each congregation is responsible for its respective worship services and ministries.  There are, however, joint ministries and periodic joint worship services in which the two congregations collaborate.
  • The leadership of CCBC is a joint board of members of both congregations.
  • Reverend Isaac Ngai is the pastor of the Chinese Congregation, and has served for more than 20 years.

People
  • Our weekly Sunday Service is attended by an average of 30 adults and teenagers.
  • Church membership in our English Congregation has comprises 30 active members, the majority of whom are long-time believers and have been faithful members of CCBC for many years.
  • We are a relatively young congregation, with approximately 70% of our members in the 20-34 age range, and 30% in the 35+ range.
  • Our young adults are primarily college-educated young professionals.
  • A few of our members reside in the Manhattan Chinatown community, while the majority live in areas of NYC outside of Chinatown.  However, everyone is connected to the Chinatown community in some manner.

Ministries

Sunday Worship Service

  • Our congregation meets each Sunday morning to encounter God through praise, corporate confession and prayer, instruction from the Word, and personal testimony.
  • Most of our congregation actively serves in our worship service in some capacity, through a rotation of the roles of chairperson, ushers/greeters, and communion servers.  The praise team presently comprises a group of five individuals.
  • We participate in the Lord’s Supper once a month.

Children’s Worship Service & Sunday School

  • Children from grades pre-K to 6 meet on Sunday morning for our Children’s Worship Service.
  • Sunday School is available for children in grades pre-K to 12.  Sunday school teachers comprise members of both the English- and Chinese-speaking congregations.
  • We also have an adult Sunday School following the worship service.

Young Career Fellowship

  • Young adults of our congregation meet weekly on Tuesday nights for Bible study and fellowship in various locations in Queens.
  • This group has existed for many years at CCBC in different forms, and has provided a comfortable and nurturing environment for the young adults at CCBC to explore God in casual and open manner.

Junior High and High School Basketball Ministry

  • This ministry is led in a joint effort by men from both congregations to evangelize and minister to the Chinatown basketball youth.
  • The main goal of this ministry is to provide mentorship to these Chinatown youth from men at CCBC who can uniquely relate to them through shared interest in basketball and shared backgrounds as American-Born Chinese (ABCs) or American-Raised Chinese (ARCs).
  • God has blessed this ministry by bringing a large group of non-believers who are open to hearing and dialoguing about the Gospel.

High School Fellowship – “Face 2 Face” (F2F)

  • Ministering to teenagers who have come to CCBC mainly through the basketball ministry, Face 2 Face Fellowship is a new ministry that meets weekly on Friday evenings for dinner, worship, and Bible study.  There are also organized social activities to help deepen relationships among group members and leaders.
  • The leaders, from both the English and Chinese congregations, have developed a program and curriculum that will best serve this group to deepen their knowledge of God and their understanding of the Gospel.

Missions Committee

  • The Missions Committee is comprised of members from both congregations who meet to discuss current and future missionaries whom CCBC supports.
  • They regularly correspond with our missionaries as well as support those at CCBC who participate in short-term missions.

Our Strengths
  • We have members who are committed to supporting the life and growth of CCBC.
  • In the last few years, we have seen a growth in the spiritual maturity of our members.  Where many young adults previously believed in God but struggled with understanding His purpose or devoting whole-heartedly to Him, many have discovered the sovereignty of God, and are seeking to live transformed lives in Christ.
  • Members demonstrate an eagerness to meet together in small group fellowship to study God’s word, and willingly participate in leading such studies.
  • We have a strong community within which we have experienced a deepening of relationships and have begun to establish trust and honest communication amongst the brothers and sisters.
  • Members actively support and care for one another, whether in helping with career, emotional, or other life questions or issues.

Areas to Grow In
  • While many of our members willingly and joyfully serve in various capacities, our human resources are limited, and many serving often feel overwhelmed.  It will be important to train new leaders and to provide better support for current leaders.
  • Most of our members desire to read and apply the Word in their lives, but many feel they do not have the proper foundation of bible study to develop a consistent devotional life.  Practical training in studying the Word is needed.
  • Our church is located in a rich harvest field, but we are lacking in our efforts to care for our community and to bring the Gospel to those around us.  Part of the challenge is limited manpower, but we also need strong leadership in this area to inspire and direct this effort.
  • We are a relatively small congregation that has added new members to our church over the last few years, but has also experienced the departure of long-time members.  We have not seen a growth in our numbers through several years.
  • We have had many high school- and college-aged youth come through our doors and consistently attend CCBC for a period of time, but have inadequately attended to their spiritual needs.  We need to find a way to relate the Gospel to them in a way that is relevant to their unique stage in life so that see a need for Christ.

Other Observations
  • We are becoming aware of our uniqueness in our identity as a predominantly Chinese-American English-speaking congregation within an ethnically Chinese church.  Though we are of one faith and are united in our belief in Jesus Christ, we recognize that the Gospel is often perceived and understood through particular cultural lenses.  We are challenged to preach the Gospel through our teaching from the pulpit, our worship, and our ministries in a way that is culturally relevant.
  • We realize that there is much growth we must undergo in our understanding of God and in our view of grace, but we are excited about this trip and are looking for ways to encourage each other in this endeavor.  We appreciate any help a new pastor could give us in this area.  We have learned, however, that lists of proper behaviors and actions we should strive harder to do (or not do) would likely not fit as an effective leadership agenda or style.

Community
  • CCBC is located at the edge of Manhattan’s Chinatown, in the middle of a diverse geographic community of primarily Chinese, Latino, and African American populations.
  • There are five elementary schools, two middle schools, and three high schools in our immediate vicinity.  Pace University is also located within walking distance.

Facilities
  • Our building is roughly 32 years old.
  • Our building consists of three stories.  The 1st floor houses our sanctuary, the 2nd floor has a kitchen and open meeting space, and the 3rd floor is divided into 2 offices, 2 permanent-walled classrooms/conference rooms, and an open meeting area that is further divided for Sunday School with movable partitions.  A basement serves as storage.
  • Our 1st floor sanctuary was renovated about 5 (??) years ago; our 2nd and 3rd floor also recently underwent extensive renovations this year.
